The best NHL movie ever?
The most entertaining movie of the 20th century?
There’s no denying it.
There’s just one problem: it’s not on Netflix.
The NHL’s annual Christmas special has no Christmas-themed movies.
There’s nothing wrong with this.
Hockey is a great sport, and it has its place in the entertainment world.
But there’s a whole other realm of movies where we can look for the best.
This year’s Christmas Special is in that realm.
What’s the best Christmas movie?
For most people, this question is the first one on their minds when they open up their Netflix account.
For the NHL, though, there’s only one answer: “The Christmas Special.”
The answer, according to NHL executive VP and VP of Original Content Craig Leipold, is a simple one.
“It’s the Christmas Special,” he said.
“We didn’t put it there to make a point of trying to create a new Christmas special.”
Leipold made the announcement in the company’s annual meeting, which takes place Friday in Los Angeles.
While it was the first time the NHL had revealed a Christmas special, it’s also the first since it took the holiday off for three seasons.
It’s the perfect time to put on a hat, grab a popcorn and enjoy a bit of Christmas magic.
The NHLChristmas SpecialThe Christmas special is the centerpiece of NHL Films, the company that produces the league’s annual holiday movies.
That means all the Christmas movies are in one package.
There are five episodes.
They are:The Best Christmas Movie of All TimeThe Most Intriguing Christmas MovieThe Best Hockey Movie of the Last 50 YearsThe Most Emotional Christmas Movie”The Best Ice Hockey Movie” and so on.
The five episodes aren’t necessarily all about the Christmas specials.
For instance, The Best Christmas Special of All Times focuses on the NHL’s legendary franchise and the events that led to its collapse in the 1980s.
Or The Most Intrusive Christmas Movie focuses on a different kind of threat — a group of disgruntled players who have been harassing and intimidating coaches for years.
The movie also features a brief look at the current state of the league.
Leipline’s presentation was the culmination of a year of negotiations between NHL Entertainment and Netflix.
That meant the two companies would work together to craft a movie that the league hoped would be a part of its annual Christmas event.
The original plan was to put the movies in a single package, but Netflix and NHL Entertainment decided to take a different approach.
The league and Netflix began discussing the possibilities in early 2018.
When they finally got around to discussing a possible Christmas special last fall, it was just a matter of time before the parties started getting to work.
The deal was finalized on March 23.
“We were excited to get the Christmas special started, and then it just became about the right timing for the right movies,” said Netflix president Ted Sarandos.
“When the deal was finally done, it seemed like it was right time.”
The movies will be shown in the same order as they are currently airing in the U.S., but Netflix has decided to move the Christmas films to different time zones.
Netflix plans to air the first four episodes of the season on Christmas Day, with the fifth and final episode airing on Christmas Eve.
The remaining two episodes will air on Christmas Night and Christmas Day in their normal time slots.
Netflix also decided to change the format of the Christmas movie.
Instead of having a pre-holiday show, the new format is a Christmas movie with all the episodes released on Christmas day airing simultaneously.
That’s not a great way to launch a new season.
“You don’t want to be the guy who has to have the first two episodes airing simultaneously, so we’ve gone a different route,” Sarandes said.
The deal also allows Netflix to release the films on its streaming service as well.
This is an important decision because it means the NHL is finally ready to put some of its Christmas content on the service.
“Now that we have the Christmas Movie package, we can go ahead and make the content available to our subscribers, but it won’t be available on our service,” Leiple said.
There are no guarantees that the movies will live up to the promise.
In fact, Netflix has said that it will be releasing only the first five episodes of each season.
But Leip, Sarands and other executives at the league are optimistic about the future of the movies.
“There is definitely hope for the movies coming out of this,” Leips said.
“It’s a great deal for Netflix,” Sarander added.
“They’ve given us all the information we need.”
For the most part, though: Netflix is giving the NHL the benefit of the doubt.
“I’m not worried about
